  • Dream trail maintenance?

Just wondering, if you had one trail that you wish could get more maintenance or general work but doesn't for some reason, what would it be?

    Dream trail maintenance?

  • One of my favorite trails is the Dickey Creek trail, but there is about a half mile or so near the beginning of that trail that is some of the worst tread I've been on.  It is steep and unstable.  About the only good thing about it is that it isn't overgrown....That would be a GREAT project, but it would be a LOT of work to fix it.

I have to hand it to Donovan and gang.  I never realized there was NO trail maintenance team from the FS.  The trails in the Clackamas district are in surprisingly good shape, even though  they are lightly used.  I try and do as much to help as I can, usually doing some brush work on trails, but I haven't even been hiking since November.  I'd really love to get out again soon.....

    • Rho Ridge, and the informally named Milepost Three. MP Three is an A#$ kicker, but a great trail. Both need attention.

there are plenty of trail sections that need brush out - especially Rhodies - where a crew could spend days or weeks to little effect, but it needs to be done.

Donovan would know the name of the trail but it is over by Squaw Meadow - where water has been running in the tread and the trail is literally a dry creek bed. Same with the access to the Rock lakes Basin from the lower of the two trailheads - can't recall the name of it now. Water damage is the most time consuming to correct in my opinion.

That's right. Clackamas District has not had a crew for quite a while.

The lack of crew is part of the reason I have been so much against wilderness expansion in our District. Any new Wilderness in our District will be a low priority bottom feeder Wilderness. The funding will still go to Mt Hood and the Gorge, etc.. The Roaring River will not have, to even a greater degree than Bull of the Woods, sufficient visitors to justify any expenditure on the trails. The few campgrounds that are in the Roaring River area are heading for complete removal.

Many users assume the FS is taking care of the trails. I have overheard passing hikers comment "must be nice having a Government job scratching on trails all day."

  • The best way to keep from beating your rig to death on the road to Frazier Turnaround is to hike the extra mile and a half from Shellrock Lake. Unfortunately, the section of the 700 trail behind the lake will usually beat your knees to death on the way back down. Great connector trail, but it has taken on some brutal water damage.

  • Mine would have to be the old Skyline trail. As for actual system trails, it would be the interior Bull trails. They get basically no attention.

    • I've seen references here to the old Skyline trail.  Where exactly does it go?  I saw the map with the 1921 alignment, but don't really know how that relates to any existing trails out there.
