  • Toxic Critters in our woods

Just some questions for those of you smarter and more experienced than I:

I've been reading some info about ticks and poisonous critters, and it got me to thinking.  What kinds of critters do I need to look out for in our neck of the woods?  My understanding is that we don't have any poisonous snakes on the west side of the cascades, only on the east side.  What about ticks?  I know we have deer ticks, but is there anything else to watch out for?  Any advice from the trenches on good practices to follow to not have problems with ticks or anything other toxic critter?

I've never had a problem, and I would like to keep it that way....

Thanks for sharing your experience and wisdom....

  • After 40 some years of stomping around our mountains I've yet to have a problem with any critter- other than yellow jackets.  While I'm aware of the growing cougar population and have seen bear a couple times, our woods are basically quite benign compared with other places.  I've watched for ticks, especially when hiking on the east side, but have never had any.  As I say, probably the biggest critter hazard is stumbling over a yellow jacket nest- but those nasty things aren't a problem until late summer.
