You're right, Don.  It's the Cottonwood Meadows Trail.

Here we go again, but this time it will be an abandoned trail in our district. This trail sign is at a junction in the trail, and it is not in a wilderness area.

Wow, Don, you are good!  After you posted that, I knew you were right.  It looked to me like the trail was going uphill (which it obviously isn't), which threw me.  I really like that trail....Hopefully they won't close the 5830 road and we lose access to it!

As for your new photo, I'll have to scour the map for that one.  It looks REALLY interesting!

I found Dodge, but without some other clues, I'm not sure where this trail is.  I'm thinking it is somewhere around Hillockburn or the South Fork - maybe the trail that goes above the river?

Rob you are about as close as you are going to get. I don't know the name of it, but it ties into the Memaloose Trail, once it crosses the South Fork at the mouth. It went on down to Dodge, but most of it was probably wiped out by the road building and logging. Anyway, the sign is still there along the trail near where there is suppose to be a junction with the trail to the Hillockburn Cabin, but we haven't been able to locate that one yet.

The trail is fairly easy to follow once you are at that sign and head on down to the South Fork. There is a 1-2 mile hike in on a logging road and a 1/4 mile bushwack to get to the sign. You kind of have to have someone show it to you the first time, or you will probably miss it entirely.I include a portion of the '52 Blue map that we have on the website that  shows the trail.

I think Hillock Cabin was moved down to a farm near the Highway 211. Not sure but I think I was told that some time ago.

Is that the Moore Creek trail on the right on your snippit?

I was looking at the '39 map which is where I found Dodge.  I didn't see it on other maps. I just took a guess based on the distance from Estacada to Dodge and then from Dodge to the trail.  Since it said Clackamas (I was guessing the river), I figured it couldn't be too far from the river:

I guess that means I need to post another photo?

Donavon:

Do you know where the old cabin site was? I haven't looked for it yet, but it would help in connecting the two trails.

Yeah, it shows the old Moore Creek trail. Too bad they logged out the middle section. I am sure that it was a nice trail from the segments I found on both ends. I guess there was a campground up on top.

Rob:

I think it is your turn now, for you were thinking in the right spot. I will have to show you what I know out there sometime this winter. With the warmup we are having, it should push the snow back up to higher elevations for a while anyway. Yippee!

Rob, you are getting as bad as me pouring over old maps late into the night. I know, if you don't, it will keep you awake when you really want to sleep. That trail heading down to the Clackamas River or the North Fork Reservoir nowdays, has always intersted me. I looked for it for a half an hour when I was up there the last time, but didn't see anythig definite.

OK, here is a photo of a current trail that is partially in a wilderness area:

I thought I did. There are concrete tower footings there but I have been told that's not the place. Just north of where the road switchs from west side to east on the ridge. The mud saddle. I do know that a non local Pine I think, from overseas (?), grows there. Planted some time ago.

Well, wherever it is, it looks like about 4400 feet.

How on earth did you infer that?  You are correct, this was taken somewhere around 4400 feet....

I am going to guess that it is the Old Baldy Trail.

It looks like it could be one of several trails in our district. So is it partially in one of the new wilderness areas?

Yes.  Actually, most of the trail is in a wilderness area.  At least as far as I can tell from the maps.

You are correct!  Your turn to post a photo.  It is my recollection that that photo was taken about half way up the trail from the west end, but my memory may be faulty....
