  • Skookum Lake Avalanche

It appears that there was a massive avalanche into Skookum Lake last Winter. The volume was sufficient to drive the ice high enough to shear all the limbs off the trees up thirty feet on the opposite side of the lake. They now litter the trail in a thick web for a few hundred feet. It is interesting to see an infrequent event that deepens a mountain lake.
The chute is about 150 feet wide and 400 feet high. Every tree shattered and shredded. Quite a sight.
Apart from the limbs along the bank, we cleared Thunder Mountain and Skookum Lake Trails so the walk in is clear of obstacles. Thimbleberries, Salmonberries and a few Huckleberries along the way. Footing poor through the burn where the firefighters tore up the trail and forgot to fix it.

  • I have seen evidence on a couple of other trails of avalanches over the winter as well.  I guess all that snow had some other effects.

Is the trail recognizable through the burn area again?  I was up there a year or so ago, and it was a little difficult to find my way through the burn area.  It was pretty ripped up.
