  • 4610 Snow?

Anyone been up there latey?  Hoping to get past the road to Squaw Mountain and up towards the end near where the road is washed out.  Dubious!

Elsewhere in the district it seems to be at about 3500'.  It will be interesting to see what happens by the end of the week.

    4610 Snow?

  • From the FS website:

Snow can be encountered at approximately 3500 -4000 feet elevaation making travel inaccessible on many roads and trails.
    • Road 46 is open for approximately 52 miles south of the town of Estacada to within 2 miles of the boundary between the Mt. Hood and Willamette National Forests. Road 46 is impassable at this point due to snow.
    • Road 42 is impassable due to snow drifs preventing access to the Timothy Lake area. Road 57 is currently the only access to Timothy Lake.
    • Road 57 is now open.
    • Road 58 is impassable due to snow.
    • Road 4610 (Abbot Road) is snow free for approximately 15 miles from its junction with Highway 224. Impassable snow will be encountered approximatley 15 miles from the junction with Highway 224.
    • Road 63 is closed at Little Fan Creek Campground (Hot Springs Fork) due to a road failure.

So, depending on how far up Squaw Mountain is (I can't quite remember, but 15 miles seems pretty close...) Hopefully the warm weather this week will help quicken the thaw. It seems really late again this year!

    • I'll bet they've been getting a lot of calls!

Thanks for that.  Yeah it's been a late winter up there again.  I heard somewhere that La Nina weather patterns last for 2 years, the 2nd less severe.  Hopefully we'll be out of (to) the woods soon.

    • Hi Rob,

I think you are right about the 15 miles. Snow-wise I would say we are in a lot better shape this year than last. Last year on May 31st I hiked up out of the Clack to the 4610 near Lookout Springs and there was about 6-8 feet of snow on the road. From the FS report you mention that part is clear right now.

      • thanks Paul!

4690 hits snow after about 2 miles, about 3500' as of last Thursday...probably a lot has melted since then.

Spent the weekend near Big Bottom, hooray what a mess of ruckus partying kids cops flying by at 2am.  And that was way down a secondary road.  Holiday weekends are no time for the woods.  Especially with low snow.
