  • Buggy status?

Planning a hike this weekend and I was wondering if anyone could tell me if the mosquitoes are still unbearable in the Rock Lakes Basin/Serene Lake/Shining Lake area.

I was nearly eaten alive in the first part of July and don't want to repeat that!

    Thanks!

  • I went up that way in the first of july as well and the bugs were nasty. But I returned a couple weeks ago - to the Shellrock area and the bugs were much more bearable. Still - take the bug juice - just not as bad as it was earlier.

  • Thanks for the info, Don. I spoke with someone who went in a week ago and it was still pretty bad. After a couple hundred bites (through my clothes and from getting under a head net) from my trip in July I think I'll wait until after Labor Day. Hate to miss the huckleberries, but there may be some left then. I managed to scrounge a few last October.

    • Just got back from the #702 trailhead area.  Skeeter were horrible, clouds of them.  Trimming brush released Great Hoards.  They got better when the cold and rain came, but we're expecting 90s again this week...

The biting flies were really bad a couple weeks ago up near High Rock.  Has been a rough summer for camping and hiking.
