  • Cougar sighting on Dickey Creek Trail

I hiked the Dickey Creek trail today, and about two miles in from the trailhead I spotted a cougar in the trail ahead of me.  The trail in that section is not straight, but winds around the various topographic features, so I saw a side view of it from where I was.  It was probably 100 yards away by direct line of sight.  When I saw something move in the distance I thought at first that it was a deer.  Then I saw the tail, and I thought it had to be a cougar.  When it turned its face toward me, there was no doubt.  It quickly ducked into the rhododendron thicket and that was the last I saw of it.  I know they're out there, and I often wonder if they are watching me as I head down the trail.  But this was the first time I have actually seen one in many years of hiking.

  • Wow!  We were just down there a couple weeks ago!  I'm not surprised tho, that's some very wild country...I'll bet it gave you quite a thrill to say the least.

Most cougar encounters end exactly the way you described it.  They have plenty of deer to eat in the Clacky, why eat stinky apelike hikers???  I'm speaking for myself of course.
