  • Rho Creek Trail is back!

I just found out that the trail following Rhododendron Creek up to Rho Ridge is now officially back on the USFS system, after at least 20 years of abandonment!  After tons of hard work by volunteers, a trail that was once extremely difficult to follow (many huge down trees, brush, faint tread, etc.)  is now once again a clear route thru the forest.  The trail was originally constructed circa 1920 (possibly earlier?).

It's come a long way in two years.  It is a long drive out to the trailhead but well worth the trip.

  • Very cool!  I hiked that trail a couple of years ago and really enjoyed it.  I prefer the lower half of the trail, since it has more creek views/sounds than the upper half.  The upper half also has a couple of more recent clearcut areas.  It is on my list of trails to hike again (so many trails, so little time!)

Just curious, but how did you find out it is now an official trail again?

    • Word of mouth thru Trailavocates advocates, and it's now on the FS site under the trail list.

If you haven't been back there in 2 years you're gonna be surprised!  It's a real trail now.  The saw guys did a ton of work.  The tread is still faint in spots but not like before.

      • Great trail - I've only hiked it from the Detroit side, up to Round Meadow and up the spur to the lookout cabin on Hawk Mountain. Last time I was at the cabin, I met a couple of people (Forest Service) doing some maintenance on it. I need to get back up there and hike some more of the trail.

        • I think you are thinking about the Rho Ridge trail.  This is the Rho Creek trail, which is about 4 miles long.  The Rho Ridge Trail is like 11 miles long (or more).  I've hiked bits of that as well.  Very interesting trail.

I highly recommend hiking the Rho Creek trail, especially the bottom half of it.  VERY nice.

          • Oops - my misreading of the trail name. I will check out the Rho Creek trail sometime soon!
