What trail am I on? Spring 2013 edition
D
Rob, you are too far west. Don, you are getting pretty close.

OK, how about the trail near Mt Lowe - Rho Ridge just south of Mt Lowe?
It looks familiar....

Rob Williams said OK, how about the trail near Mt Lowe - Rho Ridge just south of Mt Lowe? It looks familiar....Close enough. It's the Rho Ridge trail just north of the Mt. Lowe area.

Was this apparent camp site ever named on any of the older maps?

kirk said Was this apparent camp site ever named on any of the older maps?I'm not sure, but I don't believe so. It looks like it was a rather "long term" camp - I'm wondering if it was used by trail builders or something.
K
Oh Boy!
That's going to make it more difficult. How big is the water it's near?
D
Rob Williams saidIt does show up on some maps from the 50s and 60s, both FS and USGS.kirk said Was this apparent camp site ever named on any of the older maps?I'm not sure, but I don't believe so. Doug Firman said It does show up on some maps from the 50s and 60s, both FS and USGS.After your comment, I decided to go look, and I think I see the camp you are talking about . It looks in pretty much the correct location. I'm surprised it is on maps that late - it looks like that camp should be older than that. Late 50's through the late 60's maps show it. Kirk, to answer your question, the water feature is "big" - but maybe not in the way you are thinking.

OK, I guess it wasn't as hard as I thought. I don't know who gets the prize. I'll let you guys flip for it.

Rob said: OK, I guess it wasn't as hard as I thought. I don't know who gets the prize. I'll let you guys flip for it.Not me!
R
kirk said Not me!OK, I won't spill the beans yet, then. But, there is a clue in something you said. And, you are too far North.I was poring over the maps looking for something over in Big Bottom near Rho Creek.
K
Gee willikers, I'm confused!
I thought when you said, "OK, I guess it wasn't as hard as I thought. I don't know who gets the prize. I'll let you guys flip for it.", that you meant your location was at Oh Boy Forest Camp. Doug seems to know where you are, and Donovan guessed Oh Boy. I only used "oh boy" as an interjection because it was the only camp name I could come up with. I thought you were over in Big Bottom somewhere.
When you said, "Kirk, to answer your question, the water feature is "big" – but maybe not in the way you are thinking.", that made me think you were by a river (big because it's long) or near Big Bottom (because it has big in its name).
So if your location is Oh Boy Forest Camp, I think Donovan won this round. If not, I'll have to talk to myself and figure out what clue I gave myself.
K
I will defer to Donovan because he knew where you were.
So the correct answers to your posting of the photo are: Collawash River, Elk Lake Trail and Road 6380?
How much trail is left there? Did you follow it very far?
R
You got it.
I actually found the info for that trail here several years ago. Doug was the one who posted the thread. You can read it here - the link is from the historical page towards the bottom there is a link to the old threads in PDF format:
http://www.trailadvocate.org/oldthreads/August%202007%20-%20Short%20trail%20to%20Collowash%20River.pdf
It was several years ago when I hiked this trail, but my recollection was that it pretty much ended at the river. I think the trail used to keep going, across the river and then up to where the Elk Lake Creek trail starts. The trail from the road down to the river is in excellent shape and not hard to find.
If anyone would like all of these old PDFs in a zip file, let me know. I can create one and send it to you, post it here or make some other arrangement. I don't think the file should be that large.

What trail am I on?
Don2K
Donovan said What trail am I on? Don2I'm not sure. But I'll make a guess: Old Baldy?
D
Well we all know it isn't Old Baldy, for it isn't bald on Old Baldy as Murphy says.
So D, is this trail in a new wilderness area or just high enough to be in the huckleberries?
