Hello All, Thinking about taking a quick backpack trip around the Rock Lakes area. I was wondering if anyone knows about road conditions up to Serene Lake. I know the Frazier trailhead is death to vehicles. I'll check with the Ranger office but was curious if anyone's been up there recently. Thanks. July 25 Just back from Shellrock lake trailhead. Did loop up through rock lakes, Serene and Cache meadows. Some small blow down. Lots of snow from Cache meadow up trail 517. trail is easily lost. Mosquitos are voracious. Hosed down with high powered deet. Probably will get some liver mutations but it's better the bites. Saw a VW bus up at Frazier turnaround so would guess it is open to just about any vehicle but I would rather hike the extra 4 miles.

Against my advice, I am heading up there today for a couple nights with some knuckleheaded friends who refuse to head East for bug free environs. Bug headnet and bug bivvy in hand, with a gallon of deet in my pack, we are headed for Rock Lake and will let you know what the road access is like next week.
