What trail am I on?

So Bryon, is this trail a current trail in the Olallie Lakes area or an abandoned one? If it is not abandoned, is it the Lodgepole Trail? Don

Rob - out of your list of names there is one that actually not mentioned yet. The trail in question - and a second slightly shorter trail - will get you to the dead end Double Peaks Trail #735. Since Double Peaks Trail starts close to two miles into a hike up there on a trail named something else, I did not consider Double Peaks Trail a correct answer. I did state something to that effect earlier. Don - it is very much not abandoned. A steady stream of through hikers. Lodgepole Trail is quite a ways off. Most or all of you have been on this trail, but since you probably just got out of your car, you may have breezed by without noticing this pond on your way up to the viewpoints and sub-alpine lakes above. There are only two trails that bring you to the Double Peaks Trail, either the PCT or the Red Lake Trail?
K
Are you on the Pacific Crest Trail, just south of Head Lake?  I don't think I've ever been on this section of that trail, maybe that's why I'm having such a hard time picturing it!
D
I suppose it could be on Top Lake Trail but the pond would need to be Spring melt only to be standing near the vicinity of the incline.   D 2.

Pacific Crest Trail it is, very close to Head Lake which in fact will be mostly screened by trees to the right as you climb up this short but steep incline. It is indeed just south of Head Lake and close to the small lot just short of the resort turnoff. kirk gave the closest location, so you can take the prize. Bryon

Okay, here's a new picture for the game.  My memory isn't great, so hopefully I haven't used this picture before. This trail has been abandoned for some time, I believe.   PICT0469.JPG

OK Kirk, you are going to have to give us a little more clue then that phoneline poking out of the bark on a tree. I can probably think of a dozen or two of abandoned trails that have such trees on them. So is this trail in a wilderness area?
K
You didn't even make a guess!  Ok, being the benevolent guy that I am, I'll give you one clue for every guess made. And even though you didn't make a guess -- here's your second clue:  This trail was very near a current road. Oh, I just realized you asked a question in your post, no it's not in a wilderness area.   There you go, you have four clues to work with now! Phone line - abandoned for a long time - very near a current road - not in a wilderness

OK I'll make a guess. How about the old Skyline Trail north of Olallie Meadows?

Good guess, but you're a ways off. You're about 2,400' too high, look lower.

I think it is along the Clackamas somewhere - near the South Fork maybe?

Yes, near the South Fork.  Here's another clue: I believe this section of trail fell into disuse before 1938. The nearby road I mentioned earlier is on the '38 map, but it doesn't show up in the teens.   While I was looking at the older maps, I noticed an Eagle Mountain. It looks like it's where Old Baldy is.  Does anyone know why it got a name change?

good mystery

Is this trail south of the main course of the Clackamas?

Not there, but you're in the neighborhood.

I would say at this point on the trail, 'twas exactly southwest and exactly west from the banks of the Clackamas. This section of the trail was also the closest it got to the main stem of the river.

I don't remember a wire on the Christian Camp trail or south fork. Great mystery!

Well Brian --- you've solved this mystery.  If I'm remembering correctly, this tree is just west of the quarry that's north of the Hillockburn swimming pool.  There were a few trees in the older timber there that still had some wire hanging off of them. The 1916 Estacada map shows the intersection of the South Fork Trail and a trail heading down to the confluence of the Clackamas and the South Fork Clackamas very near this location.  If you poke around in the bigger timber between the quarry and Hillockburn Road, you should be able to find these remnants.   Your turn!

While looking for a waterfall, i stumbled upon this site where an old trail used to be.   It's not in a wilderness   TA_guess.jpg
