What Trail am I am - Fall Edition
B
Today it is a no-outlet trail. Originally it was just one stop on the string. I have been considering following one of the former outlets which is now abandoned and far from obvious.

That woody shrub on the right, huckleberry?
The rocks, large? Exposed by man or natural?
My reckless guess: Buck Lake.
Don2
B
It's not Buck Lake.
Outside of the trail itself, this trail has not been altered by man. It is a defacto wilderness.
There are huckleberries there. Overall a light shrub cover over much of the trail. Lots of boulder fields mixed into the light woods.
K
Is that Oregon Grape growing amongst the moss?
B
The thing in the center is a stunted turtlehead, and on the left is something I can't identify. There is no Oregon grape in the photo. To the right is two huckleberries.
As I recall the whole rock was six feet high or so and more than that across. The mossy shelf is probably four or five feet wide. There is rock nearby with dripstone formed when still partially molten.
I might add that this trail is no longer maintained, and the tread iis just beginning to show it the past few years. All the trail signs are down.
D
I fold.

I have no idea where this might be, but you have me interested to find out.
K
I assumed the seedlings on the left were the same as the plant in the middle. Do you think this plant is Chelone glabra, or is it Nothochelone nemorosa? Do you know if it's a native or a naturalized plant in our neck of the woods?
Is the location in this photo near a body of water?
B
The Notochelone is a fairly common Cascades forest native that occasionally shows up in open meadows. The two plants in the picture may be the same, but I would't swear to it on the basis of this picture.
The nearest lake is about a mile away or more as I can't remember exactly where along the trail I took this. The trailhead, such as it is, is about 3/4 of a mile from the lake. This area shows several streams on the map but I've never seen water in any of them.
Unfortunately my camera broke after taking this picture and I never got one of the whole rock.
Clue: the trails in this location were not abandoned because of roading or budget cuts. The trail which formerly headed north from the destination of the trail in question, has suffered from a high erosion rate and I've yet to spot it. I've not looked for it since I found out that a trail was once there. You would have several miles of defacto wilderness on that trail once you found it.

Your comments leave me more and more interested in this mystery trail.
Are there roads near it? I need some other clues to begin guessing.
I'll just throw out a wild guess and see if the lake is Surprise Lake (the one in the Fish Creek drainage)
D
D. I am with you. I folded and am almost gone. I have been setting back and looking and I don't like what I see. Why we are trying to determine a trail by what grows out between 2 rocks adjacent to the trail. This is almost as bad as the one with a "campsite" a 100' away from the trail, with no view of the trail in question. Come on people, lets get real. This is suppose to be about guessing what trail I am on, from the the trail, look out around you and take a photo, but leave the microscope at home. What, I need to take photos of the ants on the trail, or do I need to take a soil sample and send it into the OSU field station to see if they can help me determine the ph of the soil. Come on!
Here's one for you. What trail am I on?
(Of course the website always posts my photo at the top of my posting no matter what I do. Hello Rob, it may work for you as an admin, but it still doesn't work for me. No matter what I do, the photos always go to the top, no matter where I want them.)
This sucks. I am out of here.

Rob Williams saidRob, this isn't the way it works from my end. If I am posting, my cursor is at where I stop posting and where I decide to post a photo, agreed. Then why is the photo inserted at the beginning of my post, when my cursor is at the bottom of my post. Do you think I always move my cursor to the top of the page to post a photo. No, for it is at the bottom of my text, where I stopped posting. I wasn't having a bad day. DonThe photo will get inserted wherever the cursor is in the editor when you upload it. I don't know what to tell you Don. I tried doing this from various browsers, from various accounts (not admin accounts), and got the same results each time. Where ever my cursor was when I clicked "upload" was where the file was placed in my posting. Maybe you are doing it differently than I am.
I guess no good deed ever goes unpunished. I do the best I can with the tools I have available to me, with the time I have available. I'm sorry it doesn't work the way you expect. I don't know what else to say.
D
Don,
I have the same problem posting photos as you are having. No matter where the cursor is, the photo gets placed at the top of the post. But I've found that it's a simple matter to cut and paste it to where I want it. Just right-click on the photo, cut, and then paste it in somewhere else. It's annoying and an extra couple of steps for each photo, but it works for me.

OK, I was finally able to duplicate the issue - assuming you are both using Internet Explorer? Using Firefox or Chrome browsers, it works as expected (putting the image where the cursor is when you do the upload). Using Internet Explorer, it appears to always put the image at the top of the posting. Yet another reason why I rarely use Internet Explorer - it has horrible support for web standards and causes issues like this. All the other browsers work one way, and IE does things its own way.

Thanks, Rob.
As you guessed, I was using Internet Explorer. Today I installed Firefox and am finding that the photo problem no longer occurs.
Other minor problems that I was having with this forum also seem to have been resolved. Thanks for looking into this for us.
And thanks for all the time and effort you put in to keeping this website and its forum up and running. Your work is appreciated!

So I am not the only one having problems posting photos, thanks Doug. Rob, thank you for again finding the source of the problem and others I have had through the years. You IT guys always get the blame when things don't work right on our computers or websites, but you always come through in the end. I feel I owe you a pint or two, hell maybe even a growler of Fearless Strong Scotch Ale.
In other news. Since I believe I was the one who started this What trail am I on? topic on this website, can we keep the photos to views from a trail, or a picture of the trail, and not so much to objects ( i.e., a rock, a plant, etc.), unless it is a trail related item. For we all know, we can hike a particular trail dozens of times and not see something another person saw on their first hike on that trail. Lets take a wider view and let others take part in the what I think is a fun pastime when we are stuck in front of our computers and not out enjoying the many trails of the Clackamas country.

Internet Explorer is a regular pain in my backside.....I don't understand why Microsoft can't seem to adhere to standards like the other browsers do. They have gotten better, but they still have a ways to go. Glad that mystery is solved.
As far as the photos go, Personally, I kind of like the tougher photos - it gives you things you might not have noticed, and I like hearing some of the background on some of these trails. But that is just my view - I'm fine with whatever.
Thank you both for the acknowledgement of the maintenance of the site. Although keeping it running is a labor of love, It does take a fair amount of time to keep it going - keeping current with the software to make sure hackers don't get in is a big part of it.

Hey Don,
I actually think I might know where that Rhodie is. Because the azalea in the back totally reminds me of that stretch of the Fanton trail with the view into the canyon.
Course it kinda looks like maybe your yard too, but I have a hunch.
One thing about the picture posting I notice is that my cursor becomes the entire side of the picture but it is off screen so I can't see it. So I can't really tell where I'm at until I post it.
I figure it's kinda like a bucket. So long as it's in there, I'm impressed.
