It is high but not Fanton.   Clue: Three Homely Sisters   D.

What the hell kind of clue is that?  Now I'm going to lie awake at night. Ok ok
B
Alright...time for a wild guess - The trail up to the overlook on Mount Mitchell?
D
That wouldn't be  the Skyline Trail out by the 3 Pinhead Buttes would it?
D
Right up the middle between Three (Homely) Pinheads. Excellent!   Except now you have to find another picture for us.   D.

Good one D. I am running out of photos myself, but I found this smokey one that might work. It is from a current district trail. Don
B
On top of Hawk Mountain - here is almost the same photo without the smoke. Bryon

I was afraid that one was going to be too easy, but I was hoping the smokey  photo might through someone off. Hawk Mtn it is. Your turn to post. Don
B
This is an abandoned trail in a wilderness area. In the Summer your route here might cross the lake bed rather than skirting the lake to the left as the picture was taken.

Great shot. Otherthan that I have no clue where this is. Is it in the Bull of Woods by chance? Don

Indeed. This is one of the lesser known and lesser visited lakes in the Bull. Sometimes it shows up on maps, sometimes not. I've never seen a name for it, so it goes by the obvious Green Lake. Bryon

Bryon there are dozens, if not a hundred of those unnamed lakes in the Bull. Can you give another hint? So the clues we have so far is an abandoned trail next to an unnamed lake in the Bull of the Woods Wilderness. I haven't spent that much time in the Bull, so some of you other folk will have to figure out this one. Don

Well, I'm going to take a wild guess.  I did go to this lake once several years ago, but I don't remember any trail to it.  Mine was a cross country adventure up a pretty steep hill.  It is a lake off the Dickey Creek Trail, off Big Slide Mountain.  My memory of it was it wasn't worth the effort of hiking up that steep hill.....
B
These clues will probably give it away - no one seems to have hiked this 125+ year old trail. This is very close to a most unnatural man made feature within the Wilderness. It is also very close to one of the most visited lakes in the Wilderness to the South. And one of the least visited lakes is a little farther away to the West.   Bryon

Nope. You were in the wrong drainage. This lake has an obvious trail along one side, and the trail is somewhat obvious to the North and much less so to the South until you are past the blowdown - a six foot thick fir right down the trail.

Is it the trail to Janus Butte?  Although I don't see any lakes on the map.
D
125 years old. White man trail right? Miners. South end 544 but then an abandoned link and then towards Pansy and down to Bagby is about that old on maps any way. So I am guessing it's a pool in the Mother Lode Country. Never having been there mind you.   D.

Your deductions, Watson, are correct and you have identified the trail in question, so you are forgiven not pinpointing the exact location along the many miles this trail runs. The nearby lake is Pansy. The unnatural feature is Bill Bagby's larger mine shaft at his Consolidated Pansy Blossom and Lily Mining Claim. You can see this lake as a shrunken brown Summer remnant on Google Earth or Maps half hidden in the mid-morning tree shadows. So your turn!

So what is the least visited lake to the west?
R
I know little about the mining activity and lost trails in BOTW, is there a good resource for this stuff?  It's somewhat forgotten. You guys are pretty good at this stuff, most of these pix really stump me.  Especially since you've gone into the lost stuff.
