What trail am I on? Winter 2011

Ever have one of those days where you write something and it makes perfect sense in your head and you read it later and think "What was I thinking?".  Well, that would be my last reply.   I meant to say it was in the correct general location, but it was the wrong trail. Matt, as to your recent photo, I'm guessing that it might be Cottonwood Meadows trail?  In the spring when it is really green and swampy.

We've all had those days. Half of what comes out of my head is gibberish so you are already ahead of me. I guess that means we have two photos to figure out then!  I'm going to guess Riverside Trail, then. I've only ever done it in the winter. As per my photo, this is quite a ways from Cottonwood meadows (never even been there - is it cool? It's on my list for the summer). I'm not completely sure it's in a wilderness area but at the least it borders on one. I'll give you one hint - it's a connector trail. As in, it's part of an established trail but not on the main trail itself - it connects to the main trail from a slightly different location.

For the photo I posted, Riverside trail isn't correct, and you are getting farther away from the correct trail. Cottonwood meadows is neat, especially if you do the cross country route to the lower part of the trail (assuming you start from the upper trailhead).  That forest down there is pretty virgin and beautiful.  The meadows are nice, although very wet (and full of mosquitoes) in the spring.  There is supposed to be an explosion of wildflowers in the spring, but I've never been able to time it right to see them. Is your photo somewhere in Cache Meadow?  Could it be the connector trail "X"?

I haven't done either but those are the only two I can think of in that area aside from the ones I already mentioned that get hiked in the winter. I'm going with Dry Ridge just because I can't think of what else it would be. As for my photo, I'll give you another hint: think large lakes and think popular trails. Also, think the edges of the district. This one is at the very edge of the district, though if I say the direction it will be a dead giveaway.

Matt - you are correct, that was a photo on the Dry Ridge trail - It is crossing a creek about two miles up.

So nobody has even come close to figuring out where that last photo was taken. I'll add another from the same part of the trail, this time looking out upon the main geographic feature in this area:

Boy, that is a tough one....Could it be Squaw Meadows/Lake?  But there isn't really a trail down that way.

Matt, that looks like one of our Surprise Lakes, this one being near the Olallie Lakes Scenic Area.

You are getting warmer. Not one of the Surprise Lakes, but in that area. I should add that this is a pretty well-known lake...but from a different perspective.
D
The only other lake that I think that looks similiar would be Horseshoe Lake.
D
Well I would say it's Russ or Jude Lake Trail, the big feature being Olallie Meadow. But I have never been to Russ or Jude Lake as the horse and mule folks supposenley take care of those trails.   D

Since nobody has gotten this yet, I'll give an obvious photo. This is the same lake (and it is a fairly large lake), taken from the other side of the lake: Now, of course, this side of the lake is not in the district. The trail on which the original photo was taken is to the best of my knowledge at the very edge of the district.

Are we looking at what was? I mean like Monon before the fire(s)? Is the little swamp one of the small pools Mon-Olallie Trail side swipes?   D

No, to the best of my knowledge has not burned. It's neither Monon nor Olallie Lakes. That should give it away for good. And once again - if the trail in my original photo is technically not in the district then I apologize - if it isn't it's no more than 200 yards outside of it. Those border regions get complicated... ;)

Its not Timothy lake is it?  I'm not sure there are any trail around that lake, but it is one of the only larger lakes....

Okay, I'll tell. It's Breitenbush Lake. The last picture I showed was from the one time I walked most of the way around the lake, looking for a view of Jefferson. Since then the Warm Springs have closed off the lake on that side to non-tribal members. The first picture I posted was from a connector trail between the PCT and the campground. The PCT mostly avoids the marshy areas near the lake but the connector skirts right through them. So it might not actually be on one of the district trails, and if that isn't how the game works, I apologize. I'll post a different trail now, since nobody got that one. This one should be much easier. It's definitely in the district. It's not in a wilderness area.

Timothy Lake has a great trail around it.  12-13 miles depending on what your source is.  Mostly flat, nice views most of the time, does go right through campsites occasionally.  Done it a couple times. Kelly

I still can't figure if Breitenbush is ours or theirs. I like the shelters there but I suspect they'll be gone soon. One thing I noticed when last there is that the water line while broke was still running. A beautiful place.   The new picture. Looks kinda like high piss fir country so I'd say it's Old Baldy? West end.   D.

Breitenbush Lake is a beautiful place but one that kind of is in no-man's land. The Warm Springs claim most of the lake (more like all of it) to be tribal land but allow camping at their campground. The district border as best I can tell is on the far west end of the lake, with the PCT trailhead just barely on federal land. As far as the new picture, think further south. I've never been to Old Baldy and need to get up there sometime this summer.

Would that be the Fish Creek Mtn Trail?
