It's just out of the old campground in the Pansy Basin, the abandoned trail is the steep old trail that goes up to Bob Bahgby's mine, right? I think the pond/small lake is just out of the pic. I wish more of the old trail was still visible downhill from there. I can't recall if it was blazed or not

You have it! Your turn. This location is a little ways past the old campground and was originally the only route to the Bagby mine of the late 1880's. It is getting harder to follow but I manage to anyway. Its a pre-Forest Service trail. "that exact little tree" is probably 30 feet across and approaching 100 ft high. It has covered much of the old trail. Their is no permanent lake or pond but one will show up during extreme flood years, eventually draining into the landslide deposits underneath. Downhill a ways a large pond shows up briefly in any wet year. Its the only water body I've seen that lies entirely on large boulders. Probably groundwater rather than drainage. This trail is still findable downhill. The wet areas have grown over and are the hardest. In the dry areas the only problem is blowdown. I've yet to find the lowest section before the road. At one time it went to Bagby Hot Springs. I've promised myself that I'll find Bagby's second mine shaft this year. Bryon

Supposedly it used to be great hunting in that basin, but we've hardly found sign of animals these days.  Ill post it's a photo when I get home late tonight from work

Was that when we did that trip to go explore the South Fork Roaring River?  And we cleared up that one section of trail?  It is on the way up from the Roaring River?

Well, its been a week so I'll post something. A current trail deserving of more use than its getting. This picture might be just odd enough of an angle that it'll take a while, or someone will get it immediately!

You are both a bit off. This is a current but lightly used trail not in a wilderness.

I haven't been to Whetstone in around 40 years myself. You are farther afield than the earlier posts. Another clue: this peak once sported a lookout.

We have a winner! Please regale us with another puzzler. The stone shelter on Mt. Lowe is just out of view at the upper right corner. I just did the preview and its adding those copies of the upper left corner of Trail Advocates pages still. A bug in the system I'm sure or am I the only one seeing those?
