Site slowness
A
Just an FYI, the site may be intermittently slow for a while. Apparently there are widespread login attacks on wordpress sites (this is a wordpress site), which is causing havoc for the host. They are attempting to mitigate the attacks, but it is kind of like whack a mole - once you stop one, another one pops up!
Hopefully the attacks will subside soon....

Yeah, I noticed that earlier this morning. The site was actually unavailable for a little while. It seems to be working fine right now.

Well, the attacks had been neutralized yesterday, but they started again this morning, a little bit modified. So, things are up in the air again. I've installed some new software on the site that might help protect it a bit. I'm hoping it won't cause any login issues for real, valid users.
It also shows all the invalid admin login attempts - they are coming in REALLY fast and furiously.....It is quite the coordinated attack going on. Stupid hackers!

The attacks seem to be coming and going - early this morning they were coming fast and furious, and later they seemed to have mostly subsided. I don't know if is due to the attackers or by blocking that is being done.
At any rate, just as an FYI, the site speed may vary considerably based on what is going on for the foreseeable future.

The attacks are still occurring and have caused numerous issues (including the inability to login). I have installed new software that is blocking access to all countries except the US and Canada, which should eliminate most of the attacks. If you have problems logging in, please send an email to webmaster@trailadvocate.org.
I'm hoping these changes will essentially eliminate the issues with the attacks and the site can return to normal again.

Thanks Rob, the site is working much better since you've worked your magic.
Sometimes it goes to that cloudflare? page, but just clicking through that has gone straight to the site.

I have disabled the cloudflare service, since it was doing strange things. One thing it was supposed to do was to block these kinds of attacks before they even got here, but it seems to have other side effects as well. I've installed an application firewall to block rogue logins to the site. I've blocked connections from all countries except the US and Canada (which took care of a lot of the logins), and dealt with a few other rogue processes from the US and Canada which are now blocked. I think the attacks have been pretty much mitigated at this point - at least as best as I can do. I will continue to monitor things to see if we get any more attacks.

Thanks for all your work to keep this site going!

You are welcome, Joe. Sometimes it is a royal pain (like recently with these attacks), but mostly it is a labor of love. It is nice to know that the work that goes into the site is appreciated, however. That makes it a little easier during the times when things are not working well.
