Here are a couple of interesting articles from 1980.  In the photo of the horse van, it appears that they are at the old BOTW trailhead rather than the one in use today.

Thanks for posting those - very interesting - also interesting to see the area around the BOTW trailhead soon after it was cut.  That was 44 years ago though.....

I didn't realize they actually used BOTW that late - I thought it had stopped being used in the 60's like most of the lookouts.
