I hiked the Riverside Trail on the 24th and it was lovely. Great fall color! The river was really raging too, since we had that torrential rain a few days prior.
I'm curious if anyone knows the history of this trail and how it became a National Recreation Trail? It isn't on the 1963 Mt. Hood National Forest map, but is on the 1966 map, so presumably it was built sometime in that three year span.
I don't know how it became a national recreation trail, but I believe I heard that the trail was built by Rondy (Howard Rondthaler) using fire crews when they weren't busy fighting fires, or training. I can't remember if I heard that from his daughters or from the gentleman (I've forgotten his name - Lloyd?) at the Mt Hood Museum. Kind of a project to keep them busy.
